Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)

Answer engine optimization (AEO) is the practice of shaping content so answer engines can extract a direct response to a question. It focuses on question-and-answer structure, concise lead sentences, and FAQ markup that lets an engine return one clear answer.

AEO and GEO overlap and are often used interchangeably. The useful distinction: AEO centers on the answer format itself, the parts of a page an engine can read and return as a reply. GEO is the broader job of becoming a cited source across generative engines, which includes answer format plus entity signals, authority and measurement.

In practice AEO means writing each section to answer one question, putting the answer in the first one or two sentences, and marking question-and-answer blocks with FAQPage schema. Featured snippets, voice assistants and AI answer boxes all draw from the same extractable structure.

Common questions

Is AEO the same as GEO?

They overlap heavily. AEO is usually framed around answer format and direct-answer extraction. GEO covers that plus entity resolution, authority and citation measurement across generative engines. Many teams treat the two as one workflow.

What content format suits AEO?

Short question-led headings, a direct answer in the opening sentence, and FAQ blocks marked with FAQPage schema. Lists, tables and definition paragraphs also extract cleanly because each holds a self-contained answer.
