WeChat Mini Game

A MiniApp game inside WeChat Mini Programs. Runs on a custom JavaScript engine with native canvas API and a 4MB initial bundle limit.

WeChat Mini Games are a sub-category of WeChat Mini Programs (微信小程序). The runtime is not a standard WebView. Tencent ships a custom JS engine with a native canvas API and partial WebGL support. Standard web games do not run unmodified; engine and shader code targets WeChat's API set.

The 4MB initial bundle ceiling is the defining technical constraint. Beyond 4MB, content loads through subpackages capped at 20MB total. Studios building for WeChat split assets aggressively (audio packs, level packs, character DLC) into subpackages and stage them at runtime. Engines like Cocos Creator have native WeChat Mini Games export targets that handle the subpackage convention.

Payment is WeChat Pay only with Tencent revenue share. The publishing entity needs ICP filing tied to a Mainland Chinese business license. Foreign studios typically publish through a Mainland co-publisher or subsidiary.

Despite the constraints, WeChat Mini Games is the largest MiniApp game market. Around 500M monthly active mini-game players. Around $5.9B projected MiniApp game revenue in 2025, most of it WeChat.
